Baxley is a city in Appling County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 4,942. The Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant is located north of the city along U.S. Route 1. International Forest Products Limited operates a sawmill employing over 50 people. The city is approximately 42 miles (68 km) east of Douglas, 47 miles (76 km) north of Waycross and 29 miles (47 km) southwest of Glennville. Baxley was first settled as a result of the Macon and Brunswick Railroad being built through Appling county in 1870. The community was named after one of the community's first settlers, Wilson BXley of North Carolina. The county seat is Appling, which is home to four elementary schools and a middle school. The high school has a total of 210-time teachers and has over 3,303 students over 50 years of age. The school district has a pre-school, elementary, middle and high school, which consists of three schools, a primary school, and a high school. It is located on the banks of the Amaha River, which flows through the city. The Amaha is a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. The town of Douglas is located in the southern part of the county, about 30 miles (50 km) south of the town of Way Cross. The state capital is Douglas, about 20 miles (32 km) to the north.
History
Baxley was first settled as a result of the Macon and Brunswick Railroad being built through Appling County in 1870. Originally, it was a railroad depot known as Station Number 7, but soon was named Baxley (after one of the community's first settlers, Wilson BXley of North Carolina) Baxly incorporated in 1875. The community has a population of about 1,000. It is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the town. The town is located near the junction of the Appling and Macon Rivers, which connect to the Ohio and Ohio Turnpike and the Ohio Valley Railroad. It was founded in 1870 as a station on the Macon and Brunswick railway. In 1875, the town was incorporated as a town. It has a history dating back to the early 1800s, when it was first known as "Station Number 7" and was named after a North Carolina man who was one of its first settlers. It became a town in the early 1900s when the railroad was extended through the town to the city of Macon, and it was renamed "Baxly" in 1881. The city is now a suburb of Columbus, Georgia.
